Kiss Her Once For Me

It’s not always something I love when it comes to one night stands that lead to misunderstandings but that is exactly what happened with this book. It follows Ellie Oliver who is at her wits end after losing her job a few weeks after having a one night stand with a mysterious woman named Jack at a Christmas party at the local book store. Everything was perfect until the next morning that left Ellie feeling hurt and rejected. That all changes or so she thinks when Ellie, finds herself a new job where she meets Andrew who is dealing with his own problems. The two strike a deal with Ellie pretending to be his girlfriend for the holidays in order to secure his inheritance and Ellie thinks this will get her back on easy street except for when they arrive at his parents house and she finds herself face to face with Jack.

The dynamics between the characters especially Ellie, Jack and Andrew were fleshed out and felt real. The author does a good job with balancing the comedy and drama throughout the book and sometimes that can be tricky to do especially with how it’s written. The beginning of the book shows how Ellie’s mother walks all over her and she can’t say no to her giving her the last dollar she has and while I found that frustrating, I do wish the author would’ve spent more time with adding more to the relationship. I found myself connecting to both Jack and Ellie and I was glad to see Ellie’s growth from beginning to the end to see her taking more chances with her own personal happiness and learning to put herself first. It’s a cliche message but it’s always a good reminder to take care of yourself in every possible way.

Under the moon throne, there have been centuries of suffering at the hands of despotic emperor, and his sons, the three terrors, as they hold the countryside in their hands. They bleed the land and leave the citizens living in fear of their dark powers they inherited from the god god locked under the palace. But, the god cannot be contained forever and with the aid of Jun, a broken guard who is still trying to deal with his grief-stricken past and Keema, an outcast fighting for his future, the god is freed from her prison and flees from her own children, the three terrors who would drag her back down to her prison where she belongs. Now, the three must find a new home for the god and keep her away from harms way and find a way to end the moon throne but the road to freedom is paved with danger wherever they go.

What a thrilling and exciting read! I’m not usually a fan of long books but this one was well worth it and while the plot was very straightforward and something that you see a lot of in fantasy books, the author does a fantastic job with the writing to make it seem like something completely new and unique. Not only do you get a compelling love story but you also get a story that shows how love drives motivations, actions, and serves as a ray of hope. All of the characters were motivated by their scorn or want for love and how the author portrayed that throughout the book was brilliantly done. It was a truly a fantastic and thrilling read and I loved the dynamics between Keema and Jun, it felt very open and real and the two of them do a lot of growing throughout the novel. Highly recommend this one!!

I may be ruthless but I am not cruel. I think it’s one of the things that Ana likes about me, I do bad things when must but I try to be good.

By day Kiki De Souza and Ana Lezama De Urianza are proper seventeenth century ladies. But when night falls, they trade in their gowns and silk for swords and muskets venturing out into the vibrant, buzzling, crime-ridden streets of Potosi in the Spanish Empire’s Viceroyalty of Peru. They spend their time gambling, crime fighting, and falling desperatly in love with one another. But, on the night Kiki’s engagment to Viceroy’s son is announced, her older brother heir to the family fortune is found murdered. The two embark on a investigation to find what happened to Kiki’s brother and if they’re not too careful, they might find themselves falling into the same trouble as he did.

What a fun retelling of The Three Musketeers with a twist. The majority of the book was very entertaining and faced paced but the one that was missing was the suspense. I didn’t really any danger especially with the villains as you know who they are once they’re mentioned so it was a bit predictable. But, it wasn’t something that really held me back from enjoying the rest of the novel and even though I don’t read YA novels that much anymore, this was a quick and easy read. Though I feel like this could work for older YA and maybe even New Adult cause it does have that kind of feel and I didn’t find anything too cheesy. Ana and Kiki, the two main characters were very fun and i love the banter between the two and although I did like the romance, I think they also work very well by themselves. At first, I found the romance a little rushed because it was very in your face but as time passed on, I started to really enjoy the romance and found it endearing. The chemistry between them sealed the deal for me as I felt that it was very real and even more so that they not only found happiness with each other but themselves. A great read so check it out!!

Book Review: Shorefall

Having narrowly saved the metropolis of Tevanna from destruction, Sancia Grado and her allies have turned their next task: sowing the seeds of a full on magical industrial revolution and if they succeed, the secrets behind scriving, the art of imbuing every day objects with sentience will be accessible to all the citizens of Tevanna, much to the displeasure of robber-barrons who were keeping this knowledge all to themselves. They must act quickly as an enemy of Sancia’s is pursuing a desperate gambit to awaken an immortal figure straight out of legend known as the heriophant and if awakened, he’ll stop at nothing to rebuild the world in his horrifying image.

The more and more I read of this trilogy, the more I love it. This one was just as exciting and fun as the first book but with more action and heartwarming moments. Sancia and her allies are so kind hearted with wanting to give back to the people of Tevanna who have lived in under fear and terror with it’s current regime. The author does a really good job with the parallels between this world and real life and I think that’s what makes this trilogy so good. I’m on the last book now and I’m taking my time with it because I don’t want it to end but I will checking out more of the author’s books because their writing is so good. The magic system is so interesting, so much of it is rooted in science that I felt confused and would’ve liked to be more alive but along with the world-building it’s hard to put this series down. A really fantastic and wild ride from beginning to end!

Book Review: FoundrySide #1

But, what she doesn’t know is that she has been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The houses who control this magic have already used to transform Tevanne into a remorseless, capitalist machine but if they could unlock the artifacts secrets they will be able to rewrite the world for their aims.

This is such a fucking fantastic series, I am totally obsessed with it and I’m currently working on the third book right now. They’re so well written and the world-building is just incredible, I feel like I’m actually there and that’s always one way to get to invest in the story. If it doesn’t have good world-building then I’ll mostly like DNF it unless the characters are really well done. The first book had me hooked from the get go and I do love how Barrett made this universe so real as the people who want the artifact only want it so they can have more power and control of millions of people and that is very relevant in today’s world. It just felt so real and I loved all of the characters especially Sancia, she’s so fiery, brave, compassionate, and willing to take on the task so matter how dangerous and deadly it is. I will have a review of the second book out soon so be on the lookout!

BOOK REVIEW: JUST LIKE HOME

As much as Vera wanted to disobey her mother’s words to come home, she knew that she couldn’t continue to run anymore. She had to face the memories that she had buried deep never to think about them again, to the home that she grew up in and the home of a serial killer. To make matters worse, she’s not alone as there is a parasitic artist is living in the guest house while also stripping up her childhood home. Even though he swears, he’s not the one writing letters in her father’s handwriting, she can’t help but be on her guard a bit more when he’s around. In order to deal with her past, she must face the secrets that will be discovered in the foundations of the notorious Crowder house.

This book was so fucking creepy but at the same time so freaking good. I was on the edge of my seat as I turned the page as I didn’t know what to expect but I didn’t think it would be this creepy. The writing really helped set the mood and I found myself very invested from the beginning and even though it was slow in some parts, I felt as though the pacing was right. Vera is quite an interesting and intriguing character and I did feel for her especially during the parts about her childhood in particular the relationship with her mother. I think that’s something I strongly related to her as I’ve had my own problems with my mother but not to this extent. It’s always hard to read about relationships like this and I thought the way the author handled it was very well done and cheesy. Vera’s family is incredibly complicated, I mean what do you do when you’re the child of a infamous serial killer? This is a spooky and fun book that will leave you wanting more so I highly recommend it.

If Delilah Greene had it her way, she would never go back to that dreadful city that is Bright Falls where her distant and cold step family are and memories of a childhood that she never had. Her life is in New York City where she is making herself out to be a skilled photographer and while she does want a relationship, being with a different girl each night is fine with her. Until the day she gets a phone call from her estranged sister, Astrid who ends up guilt tripping Deliliah into coming home for wedding and although she wants to say no, the five-figure check would be nice to have. Delilah ends up going but is not going to enjoy it. Or so she thinks.

This was an emotionally packed roller coaster from beginning to end and also hit me really hard as I related to Delilah’s heartache and pain from how her cold and distant family treated her. I really felt for her and found her to be a very real and relatable character and not just because of her trauma. In addition to that, I did enjoy seeing her relationship with her stepsister Astrid get better as things were discovered that the two girls didn’t know and ended up becoming closer because of it. Although, I wasn’t a fan of one of Astrid’s friends, Iris who was flat out a bully and treated Delilah like a child and I found myself speed reading whenever she was present. On the other hand, Delilah does become close with Clarie and I found their chemistry very real and loved the dynamics between them! Overall, an enjoyable book with a few bumps in the road but I highly recommend it.

This was such a fantastic book!!! I loved every bit of it, I wish I’d read it sooner as I found the plot, characters, and how it progressed very engaging. Lan Tran, Katrina, and Shizuka were all unique in their own way while also feeling so real and their dynamics were well done and that’s always a plus. It’s such a drag when the characters are so underdeveloped and for me it makes me less interested in the story. How the characters fit in with the plot and how it developed until the end flowed very nicely and nothing really felt out of place and I have always loved the found family trope and I felt that it was really well done in the book. There are times where it can be overdone and under developed but it wasn’t here so I was very happy about that. While the book does have a lot of heart-warming and fun moments, it also shows the unpleasant horrible, and dark moments especially for these characters. Lastly, the LGBT representation was fantastic and not used as plot devices but actually human beings because sometimes it can be disappointing when the rep is there but they’re only there as a plot device. So, this book was fantastic all around so I highly recommend it.
